Japanese Pattern Books

I went a bit crazy last summer purchasing Japanese pattern books for girl's clothing.  I really like these patterns;  they're simple, not fussy and despite not understanding a lick of written Japanese, I've been successful in making a few things from the books.  Plus the photography is beautiful in these books, it makes you want to make one of everything.

I must admit when I first came home with them, I studied them non-stop (Jim thought I was a little crazy and I was beginning to wonder myself).  To trace the patterns I bought a  giant roll of tracing paper at Pearl Paint, which has worked out quite well.

Here's the latest top I finished for Chloe, the lighting isn't so great this afternoon, so the picture isn't as good as it could be :-(

Despite the language issues with the books, the few items I've made very simple and easy. With this particular top, there were a few modifications - I made it a bit narrower and longer, so hopefully it won't look like she's wearing a cape.  This past weekend, someone was generous enough to comment the last one I made was her 'cape' shirt, humph.

I think this little shirt is pretty much the same top pattern from Belle Epoque and then the dress version here.  Below is the cover of the book it's from (ISBN#4579110544) and the picture of it from the book. Crafting Japanese is a good resource for information and help on using these pattern books.

I love the little top, so cute and pretty too. I am sure that Chloe will look gorgeous in it. What a bummer too being laid off when you are pregnant, it does suck and I am sure that employers do this everywhere around the world. Sometimes I think that the employees have no rights really do they. I hope you find something that suits you too, so you dont have to spend too much time away from your daughter. I cant wait to see how the kimono turns out too.

Cute top and fabric. i also have this book but have yet to brave the "figuring" of patterns. You say simple and easy.... that's encouraging.
i love your fabrics and sewing and knitting here and i even love the gems you posted from your jewelry stash.

You have a cute blog, and are very creative. I love the things you create. Thanks for sharing.
